Information About Academic Credit at Cemanahuac

Undergraduate Studies

2010

Several options are available to those wishing to receive undergraduate credits for their work at Cemanahuac. (See "Academic Credit".) Below are two options available through colleges with articulation agreements with Cemanahuac including the Seattle Central Community College, and the University of Minnesota. For more information, be sure to contact Vivian Harvey.

CREDIT FOR SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL STUDIES

TRAVEL/STUDY is designed to provide classroom enrichment opportunities and staff development possibilities for educators who undertake foreign travel and study programs. It offers the participants an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and
to take advantage of materials and locations which are available only through travel and study programs offered abroad.

TRAVEL/STUDY is open to teachers, librarians, administrators, private school personnel, and other interested persons who are working with children.

Professor Steven J. Tash is able to award undergraduate credit to college students and adults though the Cooperative Education program, Seattle Central Community College
for either Spanish language study or intensive travel study programs at Cemanahuac.

Professor Tash teaches as an instructor for San Jose State University and works as a part-time faculty member in the Learning Resources Center at Saddleback Community
College and as an ad hoc faculty member at Seattle Central Community College in Seattle, Washington. Mr. Tash has a B.A. in History, a M.S. in Information Science, and teaching credentials from elementary to community college. He has been involved with experiential education coursework with major universities for over 25 years. He is currently engaged and practicing Online Education and Distance Education teaching
utilizing the World Wide Web and various online discussion boards and environments such as Blackboard and Elluminate.

Seattle Central Community College is fully accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

CREDIT CAN BE EARNED THROUGH THE FOLLOWING COURSEWORK:

LANGUAGE STUDY:
These courses are for the student who plans on taking advantage of language study opportunities outside the USA, living with a family for total language immersion, and attending a language school while at the same time studying the culture of the country. Students will be expected to complete all course requirements upon their return to the United States. (5 or 10 credits)

HUM 291: Spanish Language Enhancement through Experiential Activities

TRAVEL/STUDY:

EDU 291: Using the World as a Classroom (5 or 10 credits)
Research outside the classroom is now a reality. Students will pick a travel destination, select a research topic, gather research data, and combine them all into a learning experience. This is a self-paced course designed to maximize learning and travel
experiences.

SSC 297: Travel/Study Experience (5 or 10 credits)
Designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students and other individuals who undertake domestic and/or foreign travel. It offers the participant an opportunity to learn outside the classroom by taking advantage of cross-cultural activities and events, historic sites, geologic formations, museums, etc. -- activities that are available through travel.

INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIP/VOLUNTEER SERVICE

ITL 197: International Cooperative Education (5 credits)
Provides students with an opportunity to earn college credit for work experiences, internships, or volunteer service in an international setting.

ITL 198: International Cooperative Education (5 credits)

ACADEMIC CREDIT IN OTHER ACADEMIC AREAS THROUGH INDEPENDENT DISTANCE LEARNING

The Cemanahuac Educational Community has received permission from the University of Minnesota to offer distance education courses in Mexico, through their Independent and Distance Learning program. The array of academic courses they offer is impressive and encompass most of the areas of general education required of most undergraduates, including (but not limited to) history, mathematics, journalism, anthropology, psychology, biology, political science and even women's studies.

They offer three options for study;

  1. an extended term, whereby the work must be completed in a nine-month period
  2. term based enrollment, in which the student must follow the university semester calendar
  3. special term enrollment, which is available for selected courses.

The University of Minnesota's Independent and Distance Learning is one of the most comprehensive in the United States. We selected their program for Cemanahuac students to offer our students the best of both worlds: an opportunity to live in Mexico for a quarter or a semester (or longer!) in an atmosphere of total immersion in Spanish, earning credit for at least three courses in Spanish, yet at the same time studying in other academic fields and earning credit for these, all of which will enable a student to complete degree requirements in a timely fashion.

We hope that students will earn their credit in Spanish at their home institution, and the course from the University of Minnesota's Independent and Distance Learning program will be used as transfer credit to supplement the Spanish language credit. Fees charged in the Independent and Distance Education program are reasonable and correspond to the regular tuition rates for University credit. There is no surcharge for "out of state" students. They also offer counseling to assist you in selecting the proper course for your individual degree requirements.
