Passports
Plan ahead!! And check that expiration date if you already have a passport.
In January 2007, all travelers to Mexico will be required to have passports.
The regular cost for the passport is $97, but it will be good for ten years.
All information is available at your local Post Office or on line at
travel.state.gov.
This is a new requirement, so in addition to the usual time to obtain the
passport, there may be some additional delay. A number of cities in the United
States have Passport Agencies where this can be obtained much more quickly;
these are listed on the passport application.
There are ways to expedite the process for extra fees (of course!), and the
application has information about this.
There are also private passport expeditors and you can obtain information
about these at www.napvs.org. Another service recommended in an
article in the New York Times is Express Visa, www.expressvisa.com, (202) 337-2442, which has offices in Washington, New York, Miami, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco
and Los Angeles.
There are special requirements for passports for children under age 14.
Again, plan ahead!
